General Information
History:
Iğdır University Department of History was approved by the Executive Board of Higher Education on 16 June 2011 and established within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In line with the powers granted by Law No. 2547, the opening of the department was deemed appropriate and student admission started in the 2013-2014 academic year. The department, which gave its first graduates in 2017, increased its student intake capacity every year and opened the second education programme as of the 2017-2018 academic year. Today, it is the largest department of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. In addition, with the recommendation of the department, the Department of History Master's Programme with Thesis was opened within the Institute of Social Sciences in the 2016-2017 academic year, and in the 2017-2018 academic year, the Master's Programme without Thesis and the PhD Programme in the Department of History started to actively accept students. The department continues to grow rapidly with its developing academic staff, undergraduate and graduate programmes.
Department Programme Outcomes:
Graduates of Iğdır University Department of History graduate with the following competencies:
- Broad History Knowledge: They have in-depth knowledge about Turkish and world history.
- Historical Research Methods: Gain the ability to collect, analyse and evaluate historical data.
- Source Languages: Historical texts such as Ottoman Turkish and Arabic.
- Critical Thinking: They gain the ability to analyse historical events from a critical point of view.
- Scientific Writing and Presentation: They can present their research effectively in written and oral form.
- o be able to use various sources: To be able to compile historical data by utilising different source languages.
Language / Type of Education:
The language of instruction at Iğdır University Department of History is Turkish. The department offers a 4-year undergraduate programme. In addition, the department offers Master's and Non-Thesis Master's Programmes with and without Thesis in the Department of History and PhD Programme in the Department of History. Graduate education continues in disciplines such as Medieval, Modern, Modern, New Age, General Turkish History and Republican History.
Infrastructure Facilities:
The Department of History offers students advanced infrastructure facilities:
- Archival and Source Languages Education: Students are taught in historical languages such as Ottoman Turkish and Arabic so that they can understand historical texts and archival documents.
- Modern Education Tools: Courses are supported by auxiliary tools such as projection, digital materials and archive documents.
- Research and Academic Support: Students have access to the necessary materials to carry out their research and scholarly work. They are also offered opportunities to participate in historical projects.
- Computer and Technology Usage: Students are able to conduct research by using computer technologies effectively.

Double Major/Minor Programs
Double Major Program: It provides students with the opportunity to earn an additional undergraduate degree in a field of interest outside their primary area of study. Through this program, students can complete coursework in two distinct departments and graduate with diplomas in both fields, broadening their academic and professional qualifications.
Minor Program: It allows students to take a specified number of courses in an area of interest outside their primary field of study. Upon completing the minor program, students receive an official certificate in that area; however, this does not equate to a second undergraduate diploma.

Exchange Programs
It offers students the opportunity to study at another university, either domestically or abroad, for a designated period. Through these programs, students gain the chance to experience different cultures, improve their foreign language skills, and acquire valuable international academic experience. The most common exchange programs include Erasmus+, Mevlana, and Farabi.

Aim of the Department:
ğdır University Department of History aims to provide in-depth knowledge and skills in Turkish and world history by providing an education in accordance with the fundamentals of history. The department aims to teach students historical research methods and enable them to analyse historical data using various archival languages and sources. In addition, it encourages students to understand the events of the past correctly and to deal with them from a scientific point of view by relating them to the present. In this direction, the department aims to train researchers and educators in the field of history and to enable them to conduct more comprehensive and in-depth studies by blending knowledge with current technologies.
Current Status and Future of the Department:
Iğdır University History Department continues to grow rapidly since the day it was opened. It offers a wide academic spectrum to students with its undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes. The department gains prestige at local and national level with its increasing number of students and developing academic staff every year. In the future, the department is expected to grow further through international collaborations and research projects and to develop actively to contribute to the historical research of the region. In addition, the existing infrastructure and educational facilities will be further strengthened, providing students with more research and practice opportunities.
Professions under the Field:
Graduates of the Department of History gain expertise in the following fields:
- Academician Lecturer: in history departments and social sciences at universities.
- State Archives Specialist: To work in the fields of expertise by conducting research in public and private archives.
- Cultural Heritage Expertise: Expertise in the fields of conservation, restoration and research of cultural heritage.
- Teacher: Working as a history teacher in the Ministry of National Education and private schools (graduates with a teaching qualification).
- Publishing and Editing: To take part in the processes of printing and publishing historical contents.
- Project Management: Taking part in and managing historical research projects.
Employment Opportunities:
Graduates of the Department of History have the opportunity to find jobs in various fields:
- Universities: They can take part in academic staff in public and private universities.
- State Archives and Public Institutions: They can work as experts in state archives working with historical documents.
- Private Sector and Cultural Heritage Areas: They can work as specialists in museum and cultural heritage projects, restoration companies, cultural projects.
- Teaching and Education: Graduates who have received teaching formation can work as history teachers in public schools and private educational institutions.
